The Wave, Utah: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Landscape for Adventure, Love, and Elopements

For more than a decade, I applied for the lottery to visit The Wave.

Year after year. Rejection after rejection.

If you know anything about the Southwest, you know the legend of this place. Carved by wind, time, and the quiet patience of nature, The Wave is one of the most jaw-dropping and elusive landscapes in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. From the moment I first saw a photo of it, I knew—someday—I would stand there with a camera.

What I didn’t know was that the path there wouldn’t come through persistence alone.
It would come through friendship.

The Power of Connection (and Saying Yes to Adventure)

That call came from two people who have been part of the Shutterfreek story since its earliest days: David and Amanda Boles.

Before “adventure photographer” was a title—before it was a business—it was simply a shared ambition. We met through curated shoots and creative exploration, but somewhere along the way, something more authentic bloomed. Our relationship became rooted in trust, shared hardship, and unforgettable experiences.

They invited me to document their 10-year anniversary as they floated silently in a hot air balloon over the open desert, Shiprock rising like a sacred monument beneath us. Another time, we accidentally committed to an 11-mile hike into Buskin Gulch—none of us realizing the full scope until we were already deep in it.

That’s how real adventure works.
And that’s how real relationships are built.

In early November, David sent a text I’ll never forget:

“Hey bro, we won the lottery to go to The Wave. Want to join us?”

It would have taken a death in my immediate family for me to say no.

Standing Inside The Wave: Beyond Expectation

The Wave didn’t just meet expectations.
It obliterated them.

No photo—no matter how iconic—can prepare you for standing inside it. The scale. The silence. The way the sandstone curves feel alive, like frozen movement. It’s humbling in the deepest sense. Time feels irrelevant here.

This place doesn’t feel real. It feels sacred.

I barely scratched the surface of what The Wave has to offer. Every turn revealed something new. Every line in the rock told a story millions of years in the making. I left inspired, grounded, and already dreaming of returning the moment the universe allows.

Why The Wave Is One of the Ultimate Utah Elopement Locations

As someone who has photographed over a thousand weddings and elopements across the Southwest, I can say this without hesitation:

The Wave is one of the most powerful, meaningful backdrops for an adventure elopement on the planet.

Here’s why couples are drawn to it:

  • Exclusivity & Intimacy – Extremely limited permits mean no crowds, no noise, no distractions

  • Unmatched Visual Impact – Natural textures, movement, and color that feel almost unreal

  • Symbolism – Time, endurance, patience, and the beauty of commitment carved into stone

  • Adventure – This isn’t a “show up and pose” location. You earn it together

For couples who value experience over excess, meaning over tradition, and story over spectacle—this place speaks volumes.

Utah Elopements Are About More Than a Location

Eloping in Utah—especially in places like The Wave—isn’t about chasing a trend. It’s about choosing intention.

It’s about slowing down. Being present. Letting the land become part of your story.

The best elopements I’ve ever documented weren’t about perfection. They were about connection—to each other, to the place, and to something bigger than ourselves.

That’s what The Wave represents.

Gratitude, Family, and What Comes Next

David and Amanda—thank you for the invitation, the trust, and years of shared adventure. You are family. This experience will live with me forever.

And to the couples dreaming of something different—something real—know this: the most meaningful experiences in life often come through people, patience, and saying yes when opportunity finally knocks.

I’ll be back, The Wave.
When the universe decides the timing is right.
